Skanda Sashti Festival
Lord Muruga is considered as the God of War and also the commander of the Devas. He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and the younger brother of Lord Ganesha. Lord Muruga is also known as by the names of Skanda, Subramanya, Kumara and Kartikeya. Skanda Sashti is a festival dedicated to Lord Muruga and it is celebrated with great devotion and respect towards Lord Muruga by millions of people all across the world, especially in Southern India. Skanda Sashti is also celebrated in various parts of Asia including Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka. Skanda Sashti is celebrated every year and it is on 25th October this year.Devotees of Lord Muruga observes a strict Vrat for getting grace and blessings from Lord Muruga and offering special pujas and rituals to Lord is considered auspicious on this day.
Six abodes of Lord Muruga
The six abodes of Lord Muruga is popularly known as Arupadaiveedu are the most impor tant temples and shrines for devotees of Lord Muruga in Tamilnadu, India. The six abodes are Thirupparamkunram murugan temple in Madurai district, Thiruthani murugan temple in Thiruvallur district, Palani murugan temple in Dindigul district, Swamimalai Murugan Temple in Thanjavur district, Tiruchendur Sri Subramanya swami temple in Thoothukudi district and Pazhamudircholai murugan temple in Madurai district. Special pujas and rituals are performed in Lord Muruga temples on Skanda Sashti. It is believed that those who get the darshan of Lord Murugan in any one of his abode on this day will get blessed with good fortune and remove negativity in life.
Rituals on Skanda Sashti Day
On Skanda Sashti day, people wake up before sunrise and take a holy bath in the sacred rivers such as River Ganga, Yamuna, and Narmada and so on. On this day, reading of Skanda Puranam and singing bhajans and Skanda Sashti Kavacham in the praise of Lord Muruga is considered auspicious. People worship Lord Muruga with full devotion and also they offer special abisheks to Lord. Those who suffered from adverse aspects of Serphant planets offer milk abishek to Lord Muruga on this day for getting relief from the Sarpa dosha. It is believed that worshipping Lord Muruga on this day is freed from Doshas.
Devotees observe fast on the day of Skanda Sashti. They avoid Non-veg food and also food containing garlic, onion is completely avoided during the Skanda Sashti Vrat.
Importance of Skanda Sashti
Skanda Sashti is the birthday of Lord Muruga. Lord Shiva gave birth to Lord Muruga with an intention of killing the demon Surapadman and his brothers Tarakasura and Simhamukhasura. It is a popular belief that performing special rituals like homam and pujas on Skanda Sashti day will get freed from all the sins their committed and it will remove doshas, bad karmic issues and malefic effects of planets in a horoscope and also health issues will be cured by performing special rituals on Skanda Sashti.
